Air ducts play a crucial role in the heating and cooling systems of both residential and commercial properties. Often referred to as the "lungs" of a building, air ducts intake and distribute air throughout the space. They are connected to the HVAC system and ensure that conditioned air reaches every corner of the property.
Given that air ducts continuously circulate air, they also collect dust, debris, and other particles from the environment. Over time, these contaminants can build up within the ducts, potentially affecting indoor air quality. It is not uncommon for air ducts to accumulate a significant amount of dirt and debris, which can be composed of various substances such as mold, mildew, VOCs, pet hair, and more.
As dust and debris accumulate in air ducts, the air passing through them can pick up these particles and distribute them throughout the property. Factors such as human activities, pets, cooking, renovations, and smoking can contribute to the buildup of contaminants in the duct system. To ensure clean and healthy indoor air quality, it is recommended by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association to have air ducts cleaned every 3-5 years.
Some dryers actually have indicators on whether or not lint has accumulated and blocked the vent. Most common of the indicators would include your clothes not drying well or taking longer to dry, your clothes smell musty, your clothes or the outside of the dryer are usually hot to touch, or the vent hood flap doesn't open properly.
Lint builds up in more places than just your lint trap. Though your lint trap does a fairly good job of catching most of the lint that comes through, it is a good idea to have your dryer vent professionally cleaned at least once a year. The lint can build up in places such as the interior dryer duct, the dryer vent and sometimes the dyer itself. Dryer vent fires can typically start with a build up of lint blocking air flow, which can ignite when it becomes too hot!
